In Roman times Alise Ste Reine was called Alesia. Vercingetorix and his Gauls retreated into the oppidum Alesia when chased by Julius Caesar and his legions. The siege of Alesia is still considered the technically most advanced battle in history. Even though more than 100.000 Gauls led by Commius came to help, Vercingetorix rode down the hill on his white horse on oct 3, 52BC and surrendered to Julius Caesar. What is now France became a province of Rome. Consensus is that the battle of Alesia was one of the battles that shaped the world to what it is today.
